The exact date of the settlement of the Jews in Sopron is unknown. However, we know that in the 13th century about 10 to 16 families lived in the New street (former Jewish street). Their street canot be called as a getto, because several Christian families lived here as well. Although the Jews who lived here were not really rich people, at the beginning of the 14th century they somehow managed to build this gothic synagoge unique to the whole of Central Europe.

According to the Jewish religion there is only one temple in which the Creator of the world is present in his real person. However, the synagoge also servs as a chapel, a mmeting house and a school. Beside the synagoge there stood a lodge, and the ritual bath can also be found here.

It is worth entering the synagoge, for visitors will gain a wonderful experience. Through the entrance door we will get to a narrow corridor, than through the main entrance into a beautifully adorned chamber. The tympan of the main entrance was made in the early 14th century. This is one of the earliest gothic works of Sopron. It still keeps its original painting and reddish colour. The arch of the chamber was made according to how merhants of Regensburg made it in the private chapels of their tower houses.

Two important elements of the synagoge is the Aaron chamber and the pulpit, The Aaron chamber is adorned by richly decorated stone frames and a tympan having grapes and leaves painted with the colours of nature. Only the basement of the pulpit is original, but its form, highly fixed bars, stairs and placement follow the original sample.

Women used to have separate worship rooms with a separate exit. They could only follow what was going on in the main chamber through narrow windowframes.

At the back of the site the ritual bath still can be seen. The mosaic law commanded baptism in running water, but here it was not pssible, so the dwell with a living water was regarded satisfactory.

In the small room holding the well visitors can also have a look at the archeological relics found in it.

In 1526 Jews were chased out of Sopron, and as a result the synagoge started decaying. Later it was made into a dwelling house. This unique and beautiful building gained back its old bright during the researches made in 1967.
