The establishment of the institute (26th November 1976) was an important station in the rehabilitation of modern Hungarian arts, regarding especially the most disputed subject of the avant-garde style. Kassák's works of applied arts were becoming more and more famous, and as such highly contributed to this favourable turning-point.
In the starting collection of the Kassák Museum there were 484 works of applied arts, 311 photographs, 6650 letters and manuscripts, 2263 books, periodicals, printing materials and 212 relics. As a consequence of Mrs Kassák's will and the continuous work of collecting, this amount just about doubled, and at present the collection includes: 1693 works of applied arts, 3121 photographs, 17110 letters and manuscripts, 3595 books, periodicals, printing materials and 215 relics.
Lajos Kassák's own works makes up most part of the collection. The so-called Békésmegyer era and the decade after 1956 provide the largest part of the material. A group of works from the 1920'ies present the full scale of Kassák's avant-garde period. The portraits made of Kassák form a separate collection, and a whole series can be displayed of the works given as gifts to Kassák by Hungarian and foreign artists. The collection entitled Hommage á Kassák contains famous Hungarian and foreign artists' paintings, graphics and statues. The photography collection includes photos taken of Kassák and some other foreign avant-garde artists.
The numerous letter and manuscript collection provides an entire insight into the artist's professional and private relationships, containing some unpublished and forgotten works, too. The speciality of the books involved in the collection is in their real historical value. Some of the books and periodicals were given to Kassák in the 1920'ies by the leaders and colleagues of European and American avant-garde movements. The rich, unique and versatile material is counted outstanding even by international standards. Another book and periodical collection provides an almost entire picture of the Italian futurist movement.
Right from the beginning these materials provided the base for the temporal exhibitions of the Kassák Museum. The purpose of the collection is to provide an insight for the visitors into some less-known parts of Kassák's life-work, and introduce forgotten enterprises and artists of the Hungarian avant-garde movement.
From the 1987 the Kassák Museum has – through independent exhibitions – presented the life work of Lajos Kassák in foreign countries. Stations of this series were: Berlin, Weimar (1987), Moscow, Warsaw, Prague (1988), Düsseldorf (1989), Tokyo, Berlin (1991), Bratislava, Tokyo (1994), Lissabon (1996), Bucharest (1999). In the scientific workshop of the museum several publications, booklets, books, catalogues etc. were made and published.
