The first collections came to live in Csongrád from the middle of the 19th century. The valuable findings, objects, and books which were kept in the schools and several institutions were moved to the Town Museum that opened in October, 1956. The different collections of ethnography, local history, and archeology have 10-12 000 pieces each.

The museum was named after László Tari dentist, who was an amateur local historian. After long lasting renovation works the museum opened again in December, 2000. The first part of its permanent exhibition is titled 'Children of Earth, Sons of Bronze - Memories of Ploughmen of the Bronze Age, Warriors, and Craftsmen in Csongrád County.' A year later the second part opened under the title: 'Centuries of Csongrád'. The third section will be open by the end of 2002.

Beside the permanent exhibitions, the museum has several temporary exhibitions open as well.
