Since 1899 there has been exhibitions held in a imposing building called the Palace of Public Culture (Közművelődési Palota). Originally this house gave home to the Library of Somogy and the Museum of Szeged, but the building today is used by the Móra Ferenc Museum and the archeological department of the university of Szeged.
Since 1962 the institute has also been functioning as the centre of the Museological Union of Csongrád county. During the course of time the museum was directed by such famous men as János Reizner, István Tömörkény or Ferenc Móra.
Visitors can see permanent exhibitions in the fields of archeology, ethnography, fine arts, natural science and pharmacy, but temporal exhibitions are also offered, even of foreign collections. The institute can offer special children programs, too. Especially outstanding item of the museum is the work of Mihály Munkácsi entitled the Hungarian conquest.
The exhibition halls of the Móra Ferenc Museum are the Fekete Ház, the Kass Gallery and the thetre historical exhibition of Mátyás Varga.
