Szerencs, a small settlement in Hegyalja area is a place of many historical events. Zsigmond Rákóczi built the first fortress of the Rákóczi family, and István Bocskai was elected a reigning prince here.
The Zemplén Museum of Szerencs was opened in 1968. Besides exhibiting the results of reginional collecting works, the main task of the museum is to care for its postcard and ex-libris collections.
The largest postcard collection of the country was founded by means of the gift of Dr. László Petrikovits. At present the collection numbers 900,000 postcards. The postcards are divided into several tematic and chronologic classes. The permanent exhibition bears the title of "The history of the postcards".
The ex-libris collection consists of about 36,000 pieces. The collecting of these was initiated by István Farkas, former worker of the museum. Almost the whole life-work of the well-known Hungarian artist, Antal Fery is found among the collection.
The region historical collection consists of historic, ethnographic and fine arts works. The ethnographical collection protects relics of Szerencs and area, Taktaköz, Harangodvölgy and the South-Zemplén region.
