The Sárospatak Gallery of the Herman Ottó Museum was founded in 1968 - on the initiative of Ferenc Béres singer. The collections of the gallery primarily represent various sections of the 20th centuary Hungarian arts. The collection items, which can be divided into four significant parts, were coming into the museum mostly through gifts.

The firs unit - which consists of the works gifted by Ferenc Béres - numbers 129 pieces. The works represent the 20th centuary Hungarian arts. There are artists in the list such as László Mednyánszky, Béla Iványi Grünwald, János Tornyai, István Nagy, József Rippl-Rónai, Lajos Gulácsy, László Holló.

The second unit was gifted to Sárospatak by József Domján, the Hungarian graphic artist that lived in America. This part of the collection consists of the life work of József Domján and a selection of graphics of the 20th centuary Hungarian artists.

The third unit represents the avantgarde of the 70'ies. Here we can find nearly all recorded artists of this movement: András Baranyai, Ádám Kéri, Zsuzsa Szenes, Judit Kele, Imre Bakk, Pál Deim, János Fajó, Tamás Hencze, Tibor Gályor, Dóra Mauer, András Medján, Sándor Pincehelyi és mások.

János Andrássy-Kurta, the outstanding artist of the popular sculpture giftid the whole of his life works to Sárospatak in 1976. The forth unit of the collection consist of his plastic works as well as their sketches, paintings and graphic works.

Besides the museological activities, the gallery holds fine arts exhibitions on 4 to 5 occasions every year. One or two exhibitions present the works of artists somehow connecting to Sárospatak and Zemplén, and some exhibitions display various innovations of the contemporary Hungarian arts.

A taste of the exhibition
The town of Hegyalja was pretty much saved from the Turkish. Its development and flourishing was the result of its viniculture. In the 18th century rich interiors of churches were created of the prosperity of the town. The decadence of the region in the 19-20th century and the change in taste did not favor the Baroque heritage. continue
