It is indispensable that a university in a city boasting a higher educational past of 650 years should nurture the memory of its predecessors, hunt out its past and historical relics and then catalogue and exhibit them. On the 625th anniversary of Pécs’s medieval university, and at the instigation of Gábor Kelényi, then rector of the Pécs Medical University, the country's first University History Museum was formed, primarily presenting the history of medical.

The idea of extending the university history museum to the other academic areas and faculties of the university was mooted in 1997 and supported by the leaders of Janus Pannonius University, Pécs Medical University and Pécs City Council. One of the city’s most imposing private houses, Vasváry House, provided a home for the museum, and here, on September 1, 2000, Pécs City Day, Rector József Tóth opened the University History Exhibition to the university, the inhabitants of Pécs and the general public.

Beginning in 2000, the university integration (the unification of the two Pécs universities and the Gyula Illyés College of Education in Szekszárd) provided new impetus for the most complete presentation possible of the relics of a common past. The present University History Collection was created at the initiation of Rector László Lénárt and within the organisational framework of Pécs University Library. The exhibition in the Vasváry House was closed on 31st October, 2006, the continued preservation, handling and collection of its stock being undertaken by the university library.

The new University History Collection opened its gates on November 17, 2010 in the building of the Klimo Library.

Temporary exhibitions are created yearly related to university events, faculty occasions, and anniversaries.

Visiting the Klimo Library is possibble beside the University History Collection.

Permanent exhibitions
The first room evokes the Gothic atmosphere of Pécs's medieval university. Here the visitor can discover the conditions under which the local universitas was created as well as its branches of teaching. With the aid of the floor map of Pécs visitors can step into the medieval city and view the main public buildings. Life-size models bring to life the institute's chancellors, staff and students, through whom, and using texts from contemporary sources, we can learn something of the life of the old university's citizens. continue
