The roads leading out of Sopianae, the Roman predecessor of Pécs to the north and northeast were edged by cemeteries. Very significant sepulchral structures have been found since 1780 from the Barbican to Széchenyi Square. These were constructed in the 4th century A.D.
This two-storey structure of the cemetery is consisting of a subterranean crypt and a chapel built above it. The walls of the crypt are decorated with murals imitating marble incrustation, Bible related themes (The Fall, Daniel in the lions den, Paradise). The Hellenistic style relief's of the sarcophagus were carved on marble from Noricum (Austria).
