PhD Borislav Jankulov founded The National Museum in 1923. The Museum grew out of private collections, like a lot of other museums in the world. It is one of the oldest institutions of this kind in the country and it is situated in the building of the former City Administration.

The Museum is of a composite type, with departments for ethnology, history, history of art, archaeology, a file centre, the library, a photo laboratory and the one for conservation. Its research work comprises the boroughs of Pancevo, Opovo, Kovacica and Kovin. Objects for the museum were obtained in several ways: as donations, collecting them on the spot and buying them up.

The experts from the Museum have been doing a research work and publishing it in professional journals. Professional catalogues have also been published as a supplement to thematic exhibitions and they are important reading selections for a study not only of the town but of a lot of other things too.

Besides the scientific research work, experts from The Museum in Pancevo are engaged in educational and pedagogical work. A lot of attention is devoted to schoolchildren who broaden their knowledge of important events from the history of their town at the lectures on the native land, which they cannot learn only from their textbooks.

Today this is a modern institution with a large and valuable permanent exhibition, the gallery, a publishing activity, depots where thousands of museum objects are collected and professionally prepared, and with a computer and electronic equipment as well, which is indispensable if the Museum wants to step into the 21st century.
