The Székely Museum in Csík, the largest museum in Hargita County, is maintained by the Local Government. We consider discovering, preserving and showing the cultural heritage of the Csík-Basin or main task. Our institute has actively participated in museum life in the Carpathian Basic, we have also organized EU projects.
The Székely Museum in Csík is also an important centre for visitors. 15.0000 tourists saw four of our permanent exhibitions while our temporary exhibitions were seen by 40-60.000 visitors in a season.
The music professor Pál Péter Domokos, the painter Imre Nagy from Zsögöd and the ethnographer Géza Vámszer began the museum at the end of the 1920s. They oversaw the preparation for the first ethnographic exhibition.
The Csíkszereda Museum became an independent institute in 1950, with the collection from the 1930s and that of the Catholic Grammar School.
At the beginning of the 1970s the collection moved to Castle Mikó, the oldest building in Csíkszereda. The castle was built in the renaissance style by Ferenc Hídvégi Mikó, the captain of Csíkszék.
The castle was finished in the 1730s. Its present state came to being in the first half of the 18th century.
