The arboretum is a worldwide acknowledged tree compilation. It is not part of the Old Bakony but is the work of farseeing people. The arboretum on 20 hectares were founded by the Cistercian Abbey to save trees and non arboreals native in the Hills of Bakony. The botanic garden we know now grew out of this one. The arboretum is managed by the Balaton National Park. It is the highest situated tree compilation in Hungary.

Where now the arboretum says, in 1737 a convent garden existed. In 1753 the forest near the monastery was cut down, except for a few old trees. This is how an oak tree that is now 400 years old survived. In 1754 the flower house of the English garden was built. The land in front of it was filled with good soil and was surrounded by a fence. Part of the fence can be seen at Köztársaság Street.

The bridge over the creek Cuha was built in 1759. A map from 1766 shows that the land where the arboretum is located was parcelled out. The parcelled land was tilled by German speaking serfs of the abbey. The famous line of lime trees were planted in 1809. The creek Cuha that had crossed the park was redirected via a new bed and a new island was developed. The summer house was built around then, too.

Nowdays, the arborateum holds trees that feel at home at 400 m over see level from all over the world. There are over 600 trees and scrubs and bushes out of which 70 are conifers. 80% of the plants are deciduous or scrubs. The most valuable is the maple collection with over 30 genera.

The visitors may buy varied publications int he arboretum shop that introduce the visitors to the history of the arboretum, as well as the plants and their original habitat. The summer house is an interesting place on the territory. Concerts were held there in the 1930's, 1950's and 1990's. A group of lime trees stand in the centre of the park with the memorial place of the abbey Remig Békefi under their shadows. A digital map via that informs the visitors on the varied plants was inaugurated recently. Only a few know that the king András I died in Zirc. His memory is commemorated by a statue erected in 2005.

The International Day of Birds and Trees is celebrated by a hurdle race every year organized by the Management of the Balaton National Park. The arboretum offers guided tours if prior notice is sent.
