The house was built by Tamás Nagy, a medium land owner of 70-80 hectares. The house was built in 1883 to an estate where a barn had stood before with a few farm buildings. The characteristics of the house, its size, looks, furnishing all mirrored traditions of Mezőcsát.

The old farm buildings do not exist anymore except for the cellar and the well. The estate was fenced with a pale with acacia trees outside of it while mulberry trees were planted inside. The estate served to keep animals and farming and so there was not garden on it.

After WWII the farm went down, the farm buildings gradually disappeared. The dwelling house was saved by those who live in it. In the 1960's, when a wave of house building struck Hungary, small landholder and peasant house were taken down one after another. This house was declared national monument in 1972.

From the end of the 1980’s, the house was gradually reconstructed by the descendants of the former owners. The furniture was also restored. By 1994, the family opened the house for tourists. Articles, TV and radio programs, tourist publications helped spreading information on the house. In 1998 a separate publication was issued on the building.

Student groups, tourists, families and tourists from abroad visited the estate. Schools from the region held unusual classes, study groups and art workshops at the building. We also gave professional help to collage and university students to prepare their thesis. A photo and document compilation informs on the life in Mezőcsát.

The original furnishing of the largest room was taken down and was not possible to reconstruct anymore. The room now holds exhibitions and workshops. Now all the rooms in the house is open with exhibitions or serves tourist or educational objectives.

In 2003, the museum became member of national museum network.
