The idea of founding a stamp museum arose in the 1920's in the leaders of the Hungarian Post Office. The idea to let the audience see the collections of the philatelists came true ten years later. As the result of careful preparatory works, the Stamp Museum of the Hungarian Royal Post opened on 28, April, 1930 on the upper floor of the Post Palace under the address of 12, Krisztina Boulevard. The exhibition was located in a ward 20x8 meters. The furnishing of the ward was made following that of the Stamp Museum of Nürnberg.

The Hungarian collection was based on the compilation of Frigyes Mirkó Poppovits. The collection of foreign material was entrusted to the National Post of Bern. This office acquired the circulating stamps. The older ones or unique ones were acquired through swapping or was given to the museum as a present. Besides the stamps of private posts, the sketches, the stamps before they were officially issued, seals, pressing tools, and the unique Hungarian stamps are shown. Copies and forgeries are also displayed.

From the beginning, the stamp museum strived to give a whole picture of stamps. Soon the space to display became too small. In 1936, the idea occurred that the museum should be moved to another building. The idea was realized in 1940, and the museum was moved to the Post Palace in Erzsébetváros. Presently the museum is located here, under the address of 47, Hársfa Street, 7th District, Budapest. The institution reopened on 23, November.

Besides the permanent exhibition, there are several temporary exhibitions every year of material that can not be displayed parallel on account of the size of the ward. Besides, the museum strives to show its material to the audience not only to the professionals. We hold graphic exhibitions, public meetings, and school occupations.
