- International Miniature Fabric Exhibition
- International Flag Exhibition
- International Ribbon Exhibition
Fabric has been important in the culture of Szombathely for 30 years. After 1968 Szombathely became the centre of Hungarian fabric biennials. The fabric biennials are nationally and internationally acclaimed. We feel happy that when we think about fabric in Hungary, we think about Szombathely. During the past years, over 2000 participants arrived from 43 countries to Szombathely.
The first ten years were the gilded years. They were full of verve. The first space fabric appeared slowly. They were not surface fabric but were embossments. According to art historians, years like those ten do not last forever. Those years, fabric remained between the frames of traditional gender. Solutions were found among the methods of applied arts.
At the beginning of the 80's fabric meant gender but also material, everything that has to do with fabric. The idea that determined the direction of the following biennials came up around that time. There not only the material mattered but also the stretching, burning, fracturing the possibilities of the gender 'Fabric after Fabric'.
The groups managed to move on from this modernist search for passage at the biennial entitled 'Gobelin' showing the world that they are masters of waving and spinning. The triumphant return of the woven carpet was celebrated there.
The first independent exhibition of the 'Miniature Fabric' opened in 1976. It presented over fifty tiny fabric works. Most of these were not bigger than 20 cm. Every artists came up with something extravagant. Miniature fabric was the best to do so. Under censorship in the 70's these miniature artworks did not show up even though they were sometimes vehicle of political messages.
A new gender came up in 1995. It was called Flag Biennial. The flags were first shown in 1996, in the year of the mille centenary'. In 2000 the professionals showed how they kept up with our times. A new gender was born, the 'Hungarian Ribbon Exhibition.'
