Since the ancestors of the village of Györköny arrived from a wine country, it is not a surprise that the culture of vine is still significant in the village. Considerably large vineyards were farmed and parallel with these a cellar village was established on the Eastern part of the valley. The press houses were built close to each other in almost perfect lines. The cellar village has a unique character and a pleasant atmosphere.

Until WWII, the main source of income was the viniculture in the village so he press houses were carefully tended. Since the press houses were built close to each other, the relationship between the owners was lively and very friendly. After the depopulation of 1945, many of the press houses lost their owners and their state was going from bad to worse.

The traditions of the cellar village of Györköny are so deep and the atmosphere is so unique that this negative process could not last long. The vineyards were still significant and they were restored from time to time because of tourism. The works started in the 1980's when the building of the museum was renovated as well.
