Archaeology and museum - these categories have gone together for more than one century. Budapest itself is a good example of this coherence and the parallel history of the 135 year-old city's archaeology and museum. Archaeology lay behind the founding of the first museum in the captial. Systematic excavations in the Civil Town of Aquincum, part of the Roman provincial capital, began towards the end of the 19th century.

The museum was not only responsible for housing these internationally important finds but its goal was their analysis and display. This is also the aim of the museum today although respect is paid to the new requirements of the present. Today, archaeology is the most important aspect of the museum's work as well. The 'Archaeology of Aquincum' is also the history of the capital's museum.

Personal objects, archaeological finds, architectural mock-ups as well as rich documetary evidence recall the more important data-records from the museum's beginnings to the present day. The National Cultural Foundation provided financial support for this exhibition.
