The Bulgaria born artist immigrated to Western Europe in 1956. He lived in Vienna for some time, then he moved to Paris and in 1964 to New York. He was known for his habit of wrapping up things even when living in Europe. His mania began with tiny objects, articles, shoes, toys after he moved to West Europe. Later on, it all took on a monumental form.
Christo's first larger work was not exactly void of political voice. It was called the 'Iron Curtain Barricade' in which he set up oil barrels to close down streets of Paris. In 1968 he wrapped up the Kunsthalle in Berlin. Then, immense changes came. A forty-km-long plastic fence in the fields of California called the 'Running Fence', the large orange curtain called the 'Valley Curtain' set up between two mountains in the State of Colorado, or the bridge Pont-Neuf parading in yellow plastic.
When talking about his art, Christo highlights its political dimension. He believes that people enjoy being opposed to authority and governments. According to him, people enjoy open situations and small victories. He takes years to accomplish his designs. He attends meetings where he endeavours to gain acceptance for his monumental designs from workers, engineers, lawyers and environment officers.
