The last thirteen years have witnessed a radical change in photography, both in terms of theory and in terms of technique. The lines separating photography from other branches of the visual arts have become blurred and uncertain. The boundaries within the visual culture are constantly being broken down or broken through. The aim of the exhibition being held at the Hungarian National Gallery is to show the changes experienced in Hungarian art photography in the period following the turn of the century, and to present the creative use of photography in Hungarian art. What kind of processes have been at work within photographic art, and how have universal photographic trends impacted on Hungarian artists? How has digital technology influenced contemporary art? What has the photography scene had to go through in order to achieve recognition and to sustain its deserved rank? Who can we describe as a photographic artist and who as a visual artist who utilises photography?

The exhibition titled Hungarian Art Photography in the New Millennium is intended to provide an answer to the theoretical questions by showing a series from each contemporary Hungarian creator.
