The need to the open the Museum of the Capital City came after the finds of the excavations in Aquincum and the popularity of the exhibition on the history of Budapest in 1885. So the deputy major Károly Gerlóczy submitted his ideas in 1886, 125 years ago on 20 October, 1887 after which the Committee of the Capital Citz decided on the opening of the Museum of the Capital City.
Bálint Kuzsinszky was appointed to oversee the works ofver structure. In the past 125 years, the museum was located in a number of buildings, from th old building of Aquincum Museum to the Hall of Art, (now Olof Palme House) or the Royal Palace of Buda. In addition, a number of other exhibition rooms of the museum are located elsewhere.
In the downstairs rooms, the exhibition is about the history of the museum, from the very beginning to today. Upstairs, it shows the museum collection and the people who contributed to the work of the museum in the greatest extent. Finally, we show a selection from entries by noted people in our visitor's diary.
