Supported by the National Cultural Found, we acquired the Shoemakers Guild Book of Székesfehérvár in 2012, in the framework of the Value Saving Pulszky Project.

In the 19th Century, the shoemaker guild in Székesfehérvár was one of the most frequented societies. The first entry in the guild book was in 1838, when the head master of the guild was István Harsányi. The number of shoemakers listed in the book was 130. Local tanners provided leather for the shoemakers. The raw material came from animal husbandry of regional manors.

Géza Baróti wrote about the book in 1938 in his article about the One-Hundred-Year-Old Guild Book of Shoemakers of Székesfehérvár: ‘This nicely ornamented guild book includes the two-hundred-year history of the guild, and through this, the history of this quiet town, too… The guild book – that was began by a shoemaker apprentice one-hundred years ago – is still hidden in the carved guild chest, can be opened with three keys, every single one of them is in a pocket of another master. When all three of them are together, the chest can be opened, the book can be taken out and read about the ’invisible’ guild.’ The one-hundred year-old book was preserved by a shoemaker master in the 1930s, living in Sütö Street.

Houses in Sütő Street were taken down in the 1970s, but the guild book survived changes. Completely out of the blue, a Székesfehérvár resident, László Ujhazy, visited the Saint Stephen Museum, with the guild book in his hand. The document was preserved by his grandfather, Mihály Soba, the former cashier for the Industrial Body. We bought the document from him.

With the book, the Ethnogrfaphic Collectin of the Museum became a lot wealthier. The nearly 200-page handwritten large book has a lot of drawings in it, is covered with black leather and is in a good shape. The data included in the book significantly add to our knowledge about the biggest guild in the Transdanubian region.

The visitor to the exhibition will find this fantastic guild book, with all the beautiful pages and information related to it.
