I first visited Szeged with a Hungarian friend about 27 years ago. Then I was a university student in Leningrad, now called Saint Petersburg. One summer I came to Hungary to see my friend, later my husband, who I had met in Leningrad. He wanted to show me the country. This we hitch hiked all over Hungary. We travelled to the town where the best friends of my friends, Baka István, Pakusza Vilmos, Katona Imre, studied, Szeged. We also visited the town of all of their birthplaces, Szekszárd and a little village. Last spring I came to Hungary again. It was great to see old friends again and remember the past. Last year I went to see my old girlfriend in Szeged. I am talking about Tünde, the wife of the poet Baka István. I showed a few pictures of my works. The thought came that we should organize an exhibition in Szeged together. Today it is reality.
Now of few words of my work. In my childhood, when I was interested in tiny things only a child can care about, there were times when I collected paper, candy wrapping paper. I remember, me and my niece showed our collections to each other. We often quarrelled over it, even though we had no idea why.
Then I began to collect tiny figures I made of paper, fibre, bamboo etc. I put these into little house made of books, paper. I remembered these when I began to make a miniature paper world.
As I began to be deeply involved in my work, I gave in to my new personality and novelty. I also began to see what shines in this little world, independent of the theories of art. I thought of showing this beauty with others and slowly little paper figures came out of this luring.
First I folded tiny figures, mobils etc. Then I thought of companying these figures. This is how the concept of 'picture boxes' was born. It became the most important element of my work.
The boxes are made of hard paper. They are all made of varied material and of varied size. People, lands and paper creatures are inside of them. They can be unfold, all of then with different technique.
At the present exhibition I show a dozen boxes. Three of them are related to Hungary.
Except from the writing of Yuri Okamoto
