The museum took up the name of Pável Ágoston (scholar of linguistics and ethnography) in 1986. He was born in Vashidegkúton (Cankova). He was director of the Vasvármegye Museum and leader of its ethnographic collection.
The collection was offered to the town by Károly Gáspár. That is how the only Slovenian museum was established in Hungary.
