The establishment of Hungarian Catering Trade and Merchant Museum was attempted a few times before it was realized. The idea of establishment of museums of gastronomy first came at the end of the 19th century. The Body of Hotels and Restaurants held the private collection of Glück Frigyes (1858-1931), one of the leaders of the association, having a museum established in the future in mind.
The institution that finally formed in 1966 began to operate in the Castle District in Buda, in the old and beautiful building of the Fortuna Inn. It was the headquarters of the institution until the summer of 2005. From September 2006, it is located in the 5th district of Budapest, next to the Saint Stephen Basilica in a building designed by Lajta Béla.
At the beginning, the museum only collected memoirs of catering industry. However, in 1970 it began to collect memoirs of merchant history too. The institution complies with the form of the requirements of Special Museums.
The collection of merchandise includes signs, brasses, furnishing of shops, tools, scales, equipment of administration, samples of products, boxes, glasses, souvenirs etc. The documentary collection includes charters, bills, etc. The advertisement material is interesting for both the professionals and private personae.
Furniture, tools and equipments are part of the material of the catering industry exhibition. Plates, glasses etc. with the emblems of hotels and restaurants are of special value. Menus and menu cards are the greatest in number in the documentary collection. The collection of blanks is less in number; however, its value is just the same.
The historic material of the museum complements the numismatics and fine art collection. The institution also owns a library for professionals.
Since the museum intends to preserve the past to help to achieve a better future, it is open for professional work. It supports the people and tourism with its unique means. Gastronomy, trade and catering industry is an important elements of its activity. Its emphasized task is to help in education and in the young people to choose profession. Unusual classes and lectures are held accompanied by guided tours to help the education of young people.
Beside temporary exhibition s held in the building in Saint Stephen Square, we also held chamber exhibitions in the Pilvax Restaurant, in the Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal, Gundel Restaurant, Erzsébet Hotel, the Economics Collage of Budapest, as well as secondary schools in Békéscsaba and Mezőtúr.
