Citizens of Salgótarján are very proud of the natural environment surrounding the town. The Karancs and Medves region preserve a lot of natural values. Among these, the world of birds is a really well-researched one. The natural scientist Dr. Béla Dornyai researched and published a number of ornithology related articles. However fauna related studies only began in the 1960s.

Imre Zsögödi Nagy was the first painter from Transylvania who after graduating from school returned to the town of his birth, taking with him artistic values from the Nagybánya School. Modern twentieth century painting art in Hungary was based on the principles of the Nagybánya School. Zsögödi learned painting from artists who were educated in Nagybánya.

'When remembering people, land and events, Csohány really intends to show characteristic features, not the exteriour similarities, he does not try to copy faces but the pure spirit, the spiritual habit that draws lines on people's faces, that evokes or extinguishes sparkle in the eye. ..He created such a personal territory through memories from his childhood and youth that is closer to nature than civilization, as life and death are just as eternal and basic topics.

One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, Robert Capa, was born in Budapest on 22 October 1913 as Endre Ernő Friedmann. He began working in photography in the 1930s. After he moved to Paris in 1933, he adopted the name Robert Capa in 1935. The photos he took in the Spanish Civil War in the period of 1936-37 were published in newspapers by the name Robert Capra. In 1939 Capa moved to the USA. In the period between 1941 and 1945 he photographed for Life in various parts of Europe
