The ancient community of Bernecebarát evolved around the west side of the Börzsöny Hills around the Árpád Age. The name came from the unification of the villages Bernece and Baráti in 1928.
The citizens of Bernecebaráti belongs to the west Palóc but unfortunatelly, their folk traditions and other ethnographic characteristics are almost all gone. The Palóc are proud, inventive, clever people, similar to the Székely with artist veins.
The village used to be a typical Palóc village. Houses had a room, atrium, chamber and farm buildings. Unfortunately, only a few of these houses remained in the village in its original form. The people have been wishing to open a County House for long. They managed to buy an old house and win an application by which they managed to reconstruct the house. The people collected furniture and other accessories.
The county house was officially opened on 23 October 2001. A great number of people came to the opening. Many offered their long time kept valuable objects. We are happy to say that it still goes on. Visitors often come and they speak about the house with respect.
Entering the house, we are in the atrium from where the clean room opens where life-size dolls are dressed in folk cloths. The bed with bedclothes, the cradle and the stove all represent old values. We have to lean down a little when entering the open kitchen. The bread baking oven is located there with requisits.
We enter the back house from there. It used to be the favourite place of kids. The spinning-wheel, the potato press etc were all kept there.
The chamber was in the back where equipment for tools used outside of the house were kept.
Real valuable things were kept in the yard: ploughs, harrows, grape press etc. It is only real though if you come and see it yourself. Here, all visitors are welcome.
