The nice baroque building is a significant part of the Main Square. The construction elements of the house had been known since the Middle Ages. In the 15th century it belonged to the Haberleiter family. King Matthias was welcomed visitor of the home in 1482, when he was fighting against Wienna.

In the 18th century it was owned by the Festetics family. The Storno family purchased it in 1872. Ferenc Liszt gave two concerts in the house.

Facing the building we can see its marvellous decorations, such as the richly ornamented closed balconies, the Tuscan pillars of the gate, and the two lions keeping the Festetics crest. There is a beautiful door knock on the big wooden gate, which probably belonged to arsenal guard Ignatius Pelican in the 17th century.

In the place of the current Pizzeria there had been functioning the first pharmacy of Sopron, called the Black elephant (15th century).

On the second floor visitors can look at the Storno collection. The family is descended from the Swiss Tessin region, but they lived in Landshut, Bavaria. Elder Ferenc Storno was born in Kismartonban in 1821, and brought up in Landshut. His talent in drawing was soon discovered, but because of lack of finances he had to follow his father's trade - chimney-sweeping. However, in his spare time he was permanently drowing. He got to our town in 1845, where he started working for a chimney master, after the death of whom he married the widow, and the whole business had to be continued by him.

His supporters found him art works to be done in Vienna. He was measuring and drawing monuments, and designing objects even for Duke Habsburg Lipót. Since the 1860'ies he had been working at home. He joined in with monument revealing and restoring works. His first main labour was the restoring of the St. Michael church in Soprióon. He also restored the church and the burial vault of the benedictine abbey in Pannonhalma. Since the 1870'ies he had been working together with his sons, Ferenc and Kálmán.

Since his arrival to Sopron Ferenc Storno had been collecting relics, and this activity was followed up by his sons, too. Our exhibition displays the collection of the family in the rooms that the family utilised between 1875 and 1984. The enteriours furnished by old relics and the art works of the family give us a faithful picture of the dwelling cultutóre at the end of the 19th century. Visitors may see valuable pieces of furniture, weapons, glass and porcelain works, etc.
Permanent exhibitions
A taste of the exhibition
The remade exhibition invites the visitors to find out about the modern history of the town and its suburbs. The exhibition is the thematic extension of the permanent exhibition entitled ‘Millennias along the Amber Road' located in the Fabricius House. The show is a mixture of traditional and modern methods of exhibiting. From the 16th to the 19th century, the material chronologically and thematically follows the history of the town and the old county. continue
