The antecedent of the museum was the Antique Collection of the Grammar School in the beginning of the 1900's. In 1913, István Halis was appointed for librarian and guard. He collected the books and antique objects in his office until 1919 after which time two rooms were given for this purpose.

At the time of the Hungarian Soviet Republic an order was given to create a museum, even a stamp was made for it, but no documents show that it ever came to existance.

In 1923, four rooms in the Grammar School on Sugár Street were furnished for the museum and library. István Halis managed the collections until 1925. Later teachers performed the task.

The museum was nationalized in 1949 which year may be accepted as the year of its foundation. In 1950, the museum was detached from the library. The field of collection of the material was designated in the same year. In the few months following the nationalization the manager was Dr. Imre Szentmihályi. From 1950, Edit Kerecsényi fulfilled the position.

In 1951, the supervisor was the nation. The museum took on the name of György Thury in the same year. From that time the museum began to develop fast, the number of the material was so large that the wards proved to be too small and in 1952 it was moved to a new building in 11, Erzsébet Square. Soon the building next door was turned to a storage.

In 1962, the Museum of Kanizsa was also taken under the auspices of the County Council. The Ministry of Education bought the building in 5 Fő Street for the collection. The new permanent exhibition opened here in 1997. The temporary exhibitions were held in the Gallery of the Town in 1981-1998.

The institution changed enormously in the last years. The textile collection is one of the largest of the Transdaubian area; the archeological collection has reached the quality and the number of the similar compilations. The historic collection is also significant.

Since the retirement of Dr. Kerecsényi Edit in 1984 dr. Horváth László managed the museum until February of 2006 when the archeologist Száraz Csilla was appointed manager.

In June 2000 the institution moved to the office and stores in 62 Zrínyi Street where the researchers can attend. The exhibitions are held in the building in Main Street. This time we present the permanent exhibition titled "People, Ways, Connections (Thousand Years of South of Zala)". The playhouse in connection and the lecture room may hold temporary exhibitions.
