Mining Museum

The main building of the museum is the shafts engine-house that is, with its white walls, iron-framed windows, spacey inner rooms, is a typical example of house built for engines at the beginning of the 20th century.

Entering the house on 145, m2, the visitors see a twin piston steam engine, one of the masterpieces of Hungarian machine industry. It was never again touched after 1959.

Left of the entrance, a Schlick-type duplex-piston steam winder that operated from 1904 to 1926 is to be seen. A 80 m2 Cornwall iron furnace and an outer 78 m2 furnace functioned in the house.

Opposite the door, various equipments of lighting are displayed in a showcase. A variation of lamps, almost all kind used in mines are to be seen.

Instruments used at the end of the 19th the beginning of the 20th century are displayed in the case next to the other one.

Instrument to check air quality, instruments used at rescue operations, self-rescue appliances, gas testing vials are in separate display cases.

Opposite the engine-house, the shaft house and the shaft tower are located. The shaft tower originally built of wood in 1912 was rebuilt with steel which is seen in this state. A memorial tablet with the names of all the victims of the mining accident in 1909 and 1955 are placed on the outside wall of the tower. A bogie is also placed in the building.

A taste of the exhibition
The exhibition presenting the past of mining in Ajka is located in the old transformer house. When the museum was opened, the building itself was still dilapidated and was only rebuilt later on. continue
Show
The 54-meter shaft inaugurated in 1977 brings the underground world of mines closer to the visitors. Shaft securing equipment, augers and simple tools used in mines are on display. continue
A taste of the exhibition
The display endeavouring to provide information on natural sciences opened with a modest showing, only with a few showcases, located in the Miners’ Club in Alsócsingeri. The display opened in 1978 on Miner's Day is located in the old mine rescue station at present. continue
"Power House" Memorial House
The community of the Ajka Power Station remembered the 50th anniversary of the opening of the power station in 1993. The Mining Museum and the Bakony Power Station Jubilee Memorial opened in the same year. continue
