The Avar Age cemetery between the villages of Kisasszonyfa and Nagyasszonyfa was discoevered by Soós Lajos in 1921 when he gatehered clay for his house. More and more skeletons were found during the works. During 1922 Soós Lajos and Horváth János continuously informed the Museum of Szombathely and everything they found gave to the museum.

During the excavations from 1923 to 1929, 167 graves were found. The financed were provided by the State, banks of Szombathely and private personae, mainly the count Mikes János. When the excavations began, the land had been disturbed significantly, this was the reason why the graves were not marked on maps.

The Museum of Szombatlehy acquired many of the finds. The first exhibition of the material opened in 1925.

Seeing the success of selling the finds on good prices, many of the locals began excavations. Horváth János found the utmost graves. around 450. At the beginning, he also gave the finds to the museum, but he was bitter to notice that all he got for them was cigar. Thus, he had a leave from the museum, he went on working being obliged that he would give all the finds to the museum. However, he sold the better finds for good prize. Most of the valuable finds were sold for antique dealers who sold them for collectors.

Due to the grave robbers, the authorities had to forbid illegal excavations in 1923. By 1929, the region was announced protected archeologically. However, this prohibition did not solve anything. Graves only remained under the roads and the football field between Nagyasszonyfa and Kisasszonyfa. These were began to be excavated in 1979 by Bakay Kornél and Kiss Gábor continued the works in 1984.

The fate of the finds moved to the museum was not obvious either. During WWII, when the building was a hospital, the objects were crammed up. After the war, it took two years two reconstruct the old museum.

The burial places excavated at the location where the Creek Surány and another little brook meets laid in the direction of Northwest-Southeast. The side of the graves is rounded. Their depth was varied. Most of the skeletons were laid on their backs; the hands were next to the body. Those who were rich had a deeper and larger grave. The smallest are the graves of children. The position of the corps in a crouching position showed its social situation. continue
