In the 1960's Ferenc Bours organized a 'Wine Museum' of his own collection of bottled drinks. He became interested in lamps while searching for the proper lighting of the museum.

He became so much interested in the beautiful pieces that without noticing it he started to collect them. He bought the objects displayed with his own money with a few exception. There were days when he purchased 20-25 of them. Most of the objects were dirty and rusty, some even lacking parts. Thus after learning the trade of restoration he repaired them all.

At the beginning, he ornamented his small flat of a room and kitchen. Later, thanks to the journalists and TV, more and more visitors arrived to see his collection. In 1970, he organized his first exhibition of 250 pieces on 'public demand' in the Cultural Center.

Off course, the number of the lamps increased gradually. He even became known worldwide in consequence of the popularizing work of the Hungarian News Agency. The Hungarian Film Industry helped him collecting lamps since it borrowed several of the lamps and the price they paid was a significant help in purchasing new lamps.

Soon, the space provided by the Cultural Center proved to be too small. In 1979 a Lamp Museum was opened in 18, Magyar Street, Zsámbék.

Presently there are 1000-1100 pieces are displayed in the sole Lamp Museum of the country. The institution was even listed in the Guinness Records. In 1980 it was accepted in the international Lamp Club in the USA, in 1983 the Australian Museums.

In Hungary, the President of the Hungarian Republic awarded the founder of the museum with a memorial coin. The Mayor of Zsámbék conferred the honor of freeman to him.
