The industrial shkanzen in Tatabánya is the first open-air museum that shows the life of industrial workers, mainly miners. The objective of the opening of the museum was to keep the miners' traditions alive.

The Tatabánya Basin gave 170,5 million tons of coal to Hungary between 1896 and 1987. Only five shafts, now part of the museum, can be seen out of the 25. All important apparatus of shaft no. 25 can be seen in their original state, thus, the visitors gain an authentic picture. The old bath where nowadays, fine art exhibitions and the permanent exhibition of Lois Viktor entitled 'Sound Bath' are held is right to the entrance.

The management was located in the office building where engineers, geologists and miners also did their paper works. Nowadays, these rooms hold the exhibitions. The visitors can see offices of supervisors and mine engineers. The old 'reading room', where the miners issued tasks of the day, also has a unique atmosphere. An exhibition presenting the history of the plant of Tatabánya is situated in the old lamp storage.

The tower with steel construction is in the middle of the yard. Transportation of the workers and material was done with so-called 'hives'. A short slanting shaft leads to the ward underground.

Several machines are displayed outdoors. The way they operated is explained by professional guides. One of the mostly visited rooms is the miner living quarters opened in 1996. The visitors there can take a peep inside the typical life and circumstances of miners in Tatabánya. The interior furnishing and lifestyle of miners is introduced until the 1940's.
