János Simor, primate of Esztergom, founded the Christian Museum. It was first opened on 12, October, 1875. Simor brought material among others from the Migazzi-, Odescalchi-, Volavy- and the Bertinelli collections.

In 1920, the museum was given statues, goblins, objects made by goldsmiths, and paintings from the collection of the bishop Arnold Ipoly. Nákó Miléva, princess of San Marco, donated the collection of fine and applied arts of her family to the museum in 1924.

WWII did not cause serious damages in the museum. It was started to wake from its sleep in 1953 when its material was reorganized. A new storage was created and the material of the museum was listed. Between 1970 and 73 the wards was renovated to create better circumstances for the display of the objects.
