A significant number of Jews lived in the town in the Middle Ages and the early new age. The present building of the synagogue was rebuilt in the Romantic styme by Wechselman Ignác (1828-1903) in 1861
The Antiauity Department of the Museum of Fine Arts bought the copy collection at the beginning of the 20th century.The collection in the Kuny Domokos Museum is shown downstairs the synagogue. The gallery holds 100 works born in Hellenism.
The origins of the statues are held by more than one museums in the world that makes the collection unique from the point of view of science and didactics.
