Mátra Museum - Gyöngyös
The former Orczy mansion
Address: 3200, Gyöngyös Kossuth Lajos utca 40.
Phone number: (37) 505-530
Opening hours: Tue-Sun 9-17
The castle hosting the Mátra Museum was built where once a manor house stood in 1770 by Orczy Lőrinc. The last time the castle was renovated was in 1824-26 in classicist style.

The former 'U' shaped building was closed from the north into an enclosed yard. The south and west wings preserved their Baroque style in the inside.

The museum function of the building developed gradually in the past fifty years. However, a complete renovation was necessary.

It took place in 2002 in the framework of a program initiated by the self-government of the town of Gyöngyös, Heves County. The castle and the yard were revitalized. A successful application served as a basis for finances.

Former research works served as basis for the renovation of the Baroque part. The celebration hall was renovated then.

During the revitalization of the yard, the reconstruction of the fences and the gloriettes were the most spectacular.

The scripts for the temporary exhibitions were written by Mrs. Báry Dr. Gál Edit and Mrs Pálos, as well as contributors, Dr. Hably Lilla MTM, dr. Szakáll Sándor ME, dr. Dávid Árpád EKF), and the technical organizors Bánkuti Albin and Láng-Miticzky Gábor.

The new exhibitions were opened by the minister Hiller István on 15 May 2007.

A taste of the exhibition
The minerals of Mátra have been known for long. The Italian artificer officer Luigi Fernando Marsigli was among the first to mention them in 1700. In his book he wrote: the cleanes gold in Hungary is mined in Heves County. Minerals generated in andesite clefts and caves effected by hot water solutions. continue
A taste of the exhibition
The exhibition is shown in four wards. We show several trophies, artworks beside thematic material. The first ward presents the hunting objects of the old lawyer Dr. Varga (De Vargas) Ervin (1912-2003.) in the form of an interior. continue
A taste of the exhibition
The primordial being compilation of the museum is the result of the work of Legányi Ferenc and his good friend Andreánszky Gábor. The exhibition commemorates these two men while also showing fossils from the Mountains of North Hungary. The material is shown in two wards. continue
A taste of the exhibition
The organisms of a natural habitat live in reproductional communities, called populations. One criterium of their existence is the network of interdependent relationships between them. Populations are both parts of, and dependent on, a higher organisational layer: natural associations. Our exhibition aims to introduce this system of relationships in order to help the understanding of our marvellously varied flora and fauna. continue
