The Archdiocesan Library of Eger is one of the most valuable historical and the only public ecclesiastic library. It was founded by bishop Károly Eszterházy Károly for the use of the university of Eger to be established. He meant to create a scientific workshop which would faithfully reflect the knowledge of its age and would give assistance in the field of education. As a result of this, he purchased the books from all over Europe with great circumspection.

The Eszterházy book collection numbers more than 20 thousands volumes. The target of the collection was the various branches of science of that time. However, after the death of the bishop the regular collecting of the books ceased. Donations and occasional purchases made up the only source of growth for library. Even thus it consisted of nearly 50.000 volumes around 1900, and by today it has swallen up to 160.000 books.

The decorative library chamber was formed in the Southern wing of the building. The main beuty of the baroque library is the ceiling fresco and the bookstand covering the whole inner wall surface. In the two smaller rooms belonging to the library bookstands also reach up to the ceiling.

The books, manuscripts, and codex materials of the collection are still available to rhe researchers and interested readers. Besides its versatile services, it also serves as a touristic sight.
