In 996, The Reign Géza settled Benedictine monks on the Saint Hill of Pannonia. The task of the monastery that strengthened at the time of the reign of Saint Stephen was to spread Christianity and European culture. The monks who followed the rules of Saint Benedict chose their lifestyle to search for God in their prayers and life they shared with each other.

The abbey surrounded by the monastery is one of the most excellent works of the late Roman-early Gothic architecture of the Middle Ages. The tourists can also see a classicist library from the time of Mathias Rex.

The buildings preserved the messages of different periods. The objects displayed there are even more interesting if we know that the monks who live in the monastery presently still use them. The buildings of the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma and its surroundings were listed among the World Heritage in 1996.

The guided tour begins in the newly built living quarters with a film showing the life of the monks.

Following the screening, the guide shows the monastery to the visitors: the church, the crypt, the library, cloister.

The life of the monks was always linked to grape and wine. Following WWII, the nationalizations destroyed the viniculture that had flourished for a thousand years.

The changes in our near past provided the opportunity for the Abbey of Pannonhalma with the help of the Hungarian Trade Bank to bring this important feature of our national culture back. The recreation of the viniculture of the abbey on its estate began with rebuilding it and forming a cellar. From March 2004, the Winery of the Abbey was started.

The tour in the vineyard begins at the door of the library. Following a little walk, we reach the building of the winery where we may learn about the technologies of wine making. As closure of the visit, the quests may taste the wines made by the monks.
