The Municipal Museum first opened on 11 November 1994 in the tarnished national building known as Ispita. In 1997 the Esterházy Palace, where the official residence is at present, was acquired. In 1998 the Margit Kovács and the Miklós Borsos permanent exhibitions were added to our programs in the original edifices. In 1999 we broadened our programs by the Graphics Workshop of Győr, in 2000 the first creative house, in 2004 the second creative house. From 2006 we also make use of the building of the Synagogue together with the university.

The Municipal Art Museum was established on 15 September 1994 by the self-government of the town of Győr. The Péter Váczy Collection was acquired to celebrate this outstanding event. The acquisition was followed by the reception of the inheritance of Miklós Borsos and Margit Kovács, the presentation of the private collection of Béla Radnai and János Vesilescu Sr., the international fine art collection of the then 40-year-old colony of artists of Győr followed by the contemporary international drawing- and graphics contemporary Hungarian fine arts collection.

Ever since its establishment, the institution has played significant role in the introduction of contemporary Hungarian and universal fine art achievements and artists. The institution emphasises the importance of museum pedagogy and public education, as well as the publication of research results and its exhibitions. The 'Masters of Graphic Arts - International Drawing and Graphics Biennial' is an outstanding international program organized by the institution. Next year the tenth biennial is organized. We are also proud of the international artist colony and a few successful Middle European exhibitions we held.

The professional periodical of the museum, the 'Arts History of Győr' is the medium where scientific research results are published.
Permanent exhibitions
The work of József Rippl-Rónai
The acquisition of the private collection of Dr. Radnai Béla and the design of the exhibition ward where it is shown, the Esterházy Palace, was the work of the Mayor Kolozsváry Ernő (1990-1994. He himself was a collector of artworks. The Mayor Balogh József fulfilled the work of his predecessor with opening the exhibition on 2, December 2005. Besides many classic works of modern Hungarian art, we also show works born in the first half of the 20th century. continue
