Phone number: (46) 530-824
Opening hours: Mon - Fri 10-14
The Diósgyőr Papírgyár Co. (Paper factory) has been an important part of the industrial life of Miskolc and Hungary since the 17th century. In our country this is the only company that has been permanently working for the last 220 years now.

Our paper industry collection was put together on the 200th anniversary of the founding of the factory. The museum could first be visited by the general public, but for security reasons it had to be closed up soon. However, on 24th September 2002 it again opened its gates by means of a fund obtained through the Széchenyi Plan.

In 1872 Sámuel Martinyi built his paper mill according to European methods and his individual idea. We know of dated and water marked paper made in Diósgyőr as early as in 1802.

One of the rarities of the museum is the certificate of the Hungarian Industry Corporation signed by counts Lajos Kossuth and Lajos Batthyány. Other contemporary documents can also be seen.

The paper merging workshop arranged on the ground floor tries to represent the practical procedures of the enterprise. The hand and later the machine production is represented by tablets, objective items, documents and ancient paper producing tools.

On the first floor we demonstrate those water marked papers made in the last few decades. These are well known in Hungary just as well outside the country. The bank note paper produced since 1920 is also represented. The new bank note series are produced with great security that wholly confine with the European standards as well.

The production of the hand merged paper can be seen in its real way between 10 and 14 o'clock, Monday to Friday. Small groups can give prior notice on telephone number +36 46/530-890.
Permanent exhibitions
A taste of the exhibition
Ever since the 18th century, the Paper Factory of Diósgyőr was very important on the industrial scene of both Miskolc and Hungary. It is the only factory in Hungary that has been open for 220 years without a break. In 1872, Sámuel Martinyi founded the factory in the valley of Szinva, keeping in mind similar European factories. continue
