The Institute of Geodesy, Cartography and Remote Sensing was founded in 1967. The institute is invested with a nation-wide sphere of authority and is a budgetary organisation. Its direct supervising organ is the Department of Geodesy and Cartography of the Ministry of Agriculture and Country Development. The institute is a part of the Hungarian network of Geodesy and Cartography.
At the time of its founding the institute was responsible for the organisational, research-development, nation-bondarial and data-archiving tasks of the Geodesy sector. However, its sphere of responsibilities further extended between 1970 and 1997.
From the year 1999 a permanent exhibition was gradually established about the history of the discipline (Bosnyák Sqare, 14th District). The Geodesy and Cartography Rt. and the Cartographia Kft. contributed much to the formation of the exhibition. Especially the former one proved a great help by displaying on the ground floor a range of items (maps, various devices and other relics) which had already been collected by the National Technical Museum. Our present overview refers to the materials placed on the ground floor, the spacious entrance hall and the council room of the first floor, and on the corridors of the 8th and 9th floor.
At present the exhibition can only be visited by the partakers of various technical conferences and by occasional small groups registered in advance. In later times this is expected to change.
