In 1979 Miklós Schöffer/Nicolas Schöffer (1912, Kalocsa - 1992, Paris) presented materials representing his whole life-work to his town of birth. Town leaders of the time purchased and altered the house that had used to belong to the family.

Schöffer's student and colleague, Lajos Dargay put together the items of the permanent exhibition. The collection of 46 pieces involve works of space dynamics as well as those of cybernetics. (Near the museum there stands the 27 metres high Light House, which also reflects credit on the master.

The museum was remarkably extended in 1995, when Éléonore Schöffer (the widow of the artist) established a library of French language in the institute.

The 2 to 3 temporal exhibitions every year display the works of outstanding contemporary artists. The so-called International Schöffer Seminars are held once every two years, where artists, writers, poets, musicians and art historians take part in order to share their achievements.
