Lajos Gábor left the present building of the museum (5-7. Tompa Mihály u., Kalocsa) to the town in 1952. In those days the Popular Arts and Domestic Co-operation was mading the items of popular arts in the sorrounding buildings. After the change of regime a travel agency purchased these buildings, formed a folkore pub and an exhibition room, too.

The thached house itself was built on a hill, so possible floods of the Danube could not damage it. It was made of mud bricks, so it preserved heat for long in winter, and kept cool in summer time. A cross on the top was broadcasting that the inhabitants therein were religious.

Such farmer houses had usually about 3 to 4 rooms. The so called "clean" room was only used on special occasions, or when visitors were coming from afar. Its walls were hand-painted with the women's imaginary woodlands, fields and flowers.

The second room was the kitchen with its open chimney where they were smoking the soussages in winter times. Heat was provided by the stove which was also used for bread making.

Next to it there was the living room. Sometimes even three generations lived together here. Walls were decorated by religious relics - symbols of the Catholic faith.

The last room, which used to be a food store, is now provides the frame of a small exhibition of the development of popular arts in Kalocsa. Embroydery for instance has not always been as colourful here as it is now. At first they used white on white background, and the black, red and blue were only added in later times. In those times these colours were extracted from plants. The embroydery of Kalocsa only became multicoloured at the end of the 30'ies.
