The little village, Fáy, is situated among the hills of the Cserehát, in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. The village belonged to the royal estate Abaújvár. The king Béla IV presented the village Fáj to one of the ancestors of the Fáy family, the valiant Rugács and his two sons, Don and Barnabás in 1243 for their heroism in the battle of Muhi in 1241. By 1292, the family was named Fáy named after the estate. Many acknowledged personalities, priests, scientists etc., were born in the Fáy family.

Several charters from the 16-17th century document the castle belonging to the family. The baroque predecessor of the building we know now was built on the original one.

In the 19th century, the building was reconstructed twice: first, in the beginning of the 1800's and then in the 1840's in the classicist style. The heydays of the castle was then under the ownership of the count Fáy István. Marco Casagrande made the embossments in the ballroom and on the facade then. The 'Musica Academia' of the count was famous over the country.

The next important reconstruction works took place in the 1930's.
