Those who like taking trips around the country know the region in the West-Danubian area called Kőszeg-Hegyalja. Hills, forests and slightly hidden ploughlands make up this region in Vas County. One of the villages of interest in Kőszeg-Hegyalja is Velem. Its popularity is due to the beautiful scenery and sub-alpine climate. Visitors to the village should visit the Bronze Age settlement unearthed on the Saint Vid Hills.

Approaching the village of velem, the tourists can see the watchtower and the church of pilgrims. The church is supposed to have been built in the 13th century. It must have belonged to the németújvári family.

Velem is situated near road 87 driving from Szombathely to kőszeg. It is about 18 km from Szombathely and 8 km from Kőszeg. The water mill is between kőszegszerdahely and velem, in the suburbs of kőszegszerdahely, right at the fringes of velem. The visitors can park their car on the right side of the road where a bus park is also available.

the earliest document mentioning the mill was written in 1568 and is to be found in the SZOMBATHELY ARCHIVES. The mill probably belonged to the Batthyány family. Ferenc Batthyány (1497-1566) was A LARGE landed proprietor and a regent of croatia. It was he who determined the financial situation of the family. he received the manor in németújvár while a regent in 1524. centuries later, in 1715, the mill was owned by the manor of rohonci Sibrik. a document from 1757 also mentioned it. In 1828, a supervisor found the village "situated right between two villages". There is a belief that Jóska Savanyú, (1845-1907) the famous rascal, once hid in the cellars fleeing from the GENDARMERIES. The daughters of the miller fed him during his hiding.

The old mill once located where the new one is now was a building with harrow walls. The mills was driven by two water wheels. PROBABLY two grindstones worked in the mill. People used one to grind, the other to mill. The strainer is made of flax and is fastened on a double wood. Almost all parts in the mill were made of pine. Iron nails were HARDLY used at the construction. The old mill was taken down in 1913. In the next year, the water head was put together by residents of velem and szerdahely. they also set up the downstairs section and the HEIGHTENED loft. The mill worked during wwi but further RECONSTRUCTIONS were done on it. Water ran in concrete dams through the race. The AMOUNT of water was set by the sluice. The millers called this structure the water head.

The water was last RECONSTRUCTED in 1919 before it acquired PRESENT STAGE AFTER the roof was taken own, a new level was added to it. All this is clearly visible since the lower part is made of stone and the upper part is of brick. Beside the new level, a motor was also built in. Energy necessary for grinding came from the creek of Szerdahely. Due to THE UNUSUALLY favourable lie of the land, sometime between WWI and WWII, a concrete catchment was built to the mill. It helped the mill operating when there was no rain. When more than necessary rain came, the mill race diverted the water.

During the very last RECONSTRUCTIONS, a new Wohanka motor was set up so that the mill can work during drought. Electricity was also wired in the building, too...

In the past, the name of the mill hardly changed. Documents preserved the following names: Riti mill, Rétyi mill, Réti mill, Schulter mill. Today it is called "Réti mill".
