The Grant was founded in 1988 by three ministries on the initiative of the Industrial Design Council. Their aim was to promote the professional development of young designers and to contribute to the blossoming of Hungarian material culture on the one hand, and on the other to the competitiveness of the Hungarian economy through the integration of design into innovation.

The Office for National Research and Technology, the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Hungarian Patent Office jointly announced the annual competition for qualified designers under 35 with an independently developed and well-founded professional programme. The Grant is announced and arranged by the official of the Hungarian Design Council.

A maximum of 15 designers may receive the grant each year. The Grant is awarded on the decision of a professional body, that continuosly monitors and annually assesses the work of the scholarship winners. Winners are required to show their work at an annual public exhibiton.
