Tevan Margit was born in Békéscsaba on 18 January 1901. She was the sister of the press owner Tevan Andor and the mother of the graphic artist Engel Tevan István. She began her studies at the forbear of the Collage of Fine Arts at the Enamel Department after which she was the private student of Zutt Richárd and Kiss Ferenc. From 1925 to 27, she worked as an independent artist in a goldsmith studio.
A taste of the exhibition
Her works had a unique tone. The influence of Bauhaus can be perceived in her early works while her later works can be characterized with archaic romanticism. Her boxes, plates, vases etc. were favored souvenirs of her time. She was among the first whose works were sold to the audience in large. She loved to work with red and yellow copper, bronze and tin.

Tevan Margit won several prizes at international expos eg. in Paris in 1937 she won the charter Diplome d'Honneur we show at our display. She won the Munkácsy Prize in 1957, 50 years ago. In 1962, she was awarded with the Merited Artist Award Prize. In 1971 and 1976 she received the Golden Degree of the 'Work Order'. In 1977, she was honored with the 'Excellent Artist' title. She died in 1978 in Budapest.

She never held a one-man exhibition in her lifetime due to her introvert personality. After her death, the Museum of Applied Arts held an exhibition of her works in 1981, in 1988 the Munkácsy Museum of Békéscsaba, in 1996 the Lánchí Galley showed her and Engel Tevan István's works.

Soon a display will open of the artworks of Tevan Margit and that of the Kolozsváry family.

We selected artworks from the collections of the Museum of Applied Arts and the members of the family. Beside boxes, dishes, statues with human and animal figure ornamentation, we also show half-done works, sketches and a few tools of the artist.
