From the 22th July the Kovács Gábor Art Foundation offers an exquisite selection at this exhibition, to reveal a more intimate facet of Lajos Gulácsy’s (1882-1932) art. This compact exhibition focuses on such characteristic themes and motifs in his oeuvre as the gardens, medieval, renaissance and rococo scenes, women’s portraits, roleplaying self-portraits, and the fairy-tale world of Na’Conxypan. The exhibition is open until 9 October 2016.
With regard to its artistic quality, the painting of Lajos Gulácsy is the equal of the work of those two other iconic artists of the turn of the century, József Rippl-Rónai and Tivadar Csontváry Koszta; like the latter, he too reinterpreted the concept of the “image,” but his character, his approach to the image, and the components of his art make him completely unlike the other two. We must also point out that his worth notwithstanding, his reception lags far behind the acknowledgement Rippl-Rónai or Csontváry has earned. Nor is this contradicted by the cult surrounding him, which usually draws on his tragic life, and not a recognition of his artistic values. It is true that his art is not easily accessible, and rather than making for fast experiences, the paintings benefit from an intimate, intensive and sensitive approach on the part of the viewer.

Tihany, the location for the exhibition, fittingly complements Gulácsy’s poetic world with a magical atmosphere, thanks to its medieval walls, winding streets, a panorama floating between the sky and the water, its echoing caves, and its silence.

The exhibition is hosted with support from the Ministry of Human Resources, and is open until 9 October 2016.
