One of the main researcher of the contemporary culture of India, with a number of books, articles, by organizing exhibitions has been Ervin Baktay (1890-1963 ) who died more than fifty years ago. He began as a painter, however, he become famous for his translations, studies, and guide books. As the uncle of the now world famous painter Amrita Sher-Gil, his family is also closely linked to India. He excelled in geography, astrology and art history.
The cult that formed around Sándor Kőrösi Csoma is due to Baktay. However, his versatile talent did not only show in his works. Through childhood experiences, he and his friends founded the Wild West and Indian-games, which was commended by the North American Indian Tribal Council.
The exhibition dealing with the versatile personality of Baktay family displays the history of his family so far unexplored in many respects, the painter's efforts, his participation in the libertine Greco-Roman "Symposiums", his literary works and occupation as a translator, also deals with his journeys to India and West Tibet and last but not least his interest in astrology.
The exhibition portrays Baktay as an indologist and art historian working at the Hopp Museum. In addition, the exhibition involves the partially reconstructed the extremely successful exhibition on the culture of India originally presented in 1951. Finally, we show an exciting part of the exhibition: the life of Wild West town and Indian tribe's life that was established by Baktay, to which the silent film directed by Baktay in 1935 ("A Paleface Wizard") bears also witness. The book presenting Baktay Ervin multifaceted oeuvre, entitled 'Indiologist Indian' will première at the exhibition opening, with thirty-nine studies, three appendices, and an extensive bibliography.
