Order establisher Clara, Chiara di Favarone died 750 years ago (1193-1253) in the St. Damján monastery, Assisi. Two years after her death she was ordained a saint.
A taste of the exhibition
St Clara was the first such order establisher woman who wrote regulations for her order. Her regulations were approved by Pope Ince IV. On 9th August 1253.

The clarrissan order consists of independent monasteries. The monastery is directed by the abbatissa, and as the second order to the Franciscans, they come under their supervision.

The begger orders, and thus the Clarissans as well, settled first of all in towns. However, the towns were not always being able to give provide alms for the nuns. Thus poverty was threatening the stability of the community. In 126 Pope Orban IV. Reinforced the new regulations. In order to fulfil these regulations the community property was a means of accumulating wealth.

The bulla "Beata Clara" introducing above regulations insisted that the members of the community use the "Ordo Sanctae Clarae" name. It was a unique event in the history of orders that a papan bulla should regulate the use of the establisher's name.

During the 700 years of the Clarissan order a great spiritual wealth was characterizing the order, which was also manifest by the fact that new regulations came to life in the spirit of the establisher's regulation.

Since 1953 St Clara has been honored as the protector saint of television, thus remembering the miracle at Christmas eve when she saw from her bed the Christmas mass celebrated in the church.
