The Thorma János Museum of Kiskunhalas has organized a significant travelling exhibition to mark the 75th anniversary of the death of the painter after whom the museum was named. János Thorma, who was born in Kiskunhalas, and later moved to Nagybánya, was one of the most excellent figures of Hungarian painting. He began his career as a student of Bertalan Székely in Budapest in 1887. He continued his studies at the Hollósy School in Munich in 1888, then at the Bavarian Royal Academy of Fine Art since 1889. In 1896 János Thorma was one of the founders of the Nagybánya artists' colony - which became famous in Europe - and he taught a lot of artists there over several decades.
The master is best known about his realist paintings and depictions of the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence in 1848-49. In his later period he also produced impressionist works, although nowadays these are less well-known. Now we are able to present many examples of the latter style to the public. Almost one hundred paintings are to be exhibited in Thorma's birthplace, in the town where he lived, and in which he studied. The works featured in the exhibition come from museums of Hungary, Germany and Romania as well as from private collections. A representative catalogue is going to be published to the travelling exhibition, which provides the opportunity for the inquisitive, collectors and experts to study Thorms works.
The travelling exhibition brings Thorma's paintings back to the most important places of his life. There is going to be presented more than 60 works of art from the 1st June in Kecskemét. Visitors can see nearly 35 works in Nagybánya (the place where he lived) from 9th August, than 25 paintings will be on the show in Kiskunhalas (known as his hometown) from 17th August. The exhibition including nearly 50 paintings goes to Munich in September, to Stuttgart in October, and to Berlin in December. Inquisitive can visit the exhibition in the Künstlerhaus in Bavaria, in the Hungarian Cultural Institute of Stuttgart, and the Hungarian Embassy in Berlin. The final station of the travelling exhibition is going to be in the Hungarian National Gallery for 3 month from February, 2013. The show in Kecskemét can be visited till 29th June.
