The new historical exhibition demonstrates (in 6 rooms) the history of the coal mining in the county from the beginning to the time of the nationalising.
A taste of the exhibition
The brown coal mining area of Nógrád county can mostly be found in the Northern part of the Mátra and the North-East part of the Cserhát mountains. In the Northern and Middle part of the basin three big coal mine enterprises were mining the coals: the Salgótarján Coal Co. (1868), the North-Hungarian Coal Mine Co. (1881) and the Salgótarján Iron Refining Association (1868).

The exhibition displays miner festive costumes, contemporary instruments, lighting instruments, maps, statistics, documents connecting to mining works and photographs. The colonies, schools, hospitals, casinos, baths and playing-fields also let us look into the lifestyle of this closed community. In the engineering office visitors can see various instruments and devices, and the photographs of those engeneers and directors without whom this branch of coal mining could not have achieved such high results.

The new exhibition was opened on 3rd December 1995.
